Video: "We Make Bread!"

Hi, Friends:

I have an ongoing Word document / blog post titled "Everything is Waiting for You," inspired by the poem of the same name by David Whyte. I wanted to share it today, but it's not ready yet. Truth be told, it may never be! In the mean time, however, I can offer you episode 18 of In the Kitchen with Amelia and Teddy, where we make bread with Andy of Bub and Grandma's bread!

The story behind the video goes like this: I bought a loaf of bread from Cookbook in Echo Park. We ate some of it, and Matt and I talked about how good it was. I bought it again and again and kept talking about how good it was. I learned that it was made by this company called Bub and Grandma's. One day, I went to their website and emailed someone named Andy asking him if he might want to shoot a video showing me and my two-year-old how to bake their delicious bread. And what do you know? He was up for it.

After watching this video, I suspect you're going to want to try the bread. It's only natural. If you're in the LA area, go to Cookbook on a Monday. That's when they sell Bub and Grandma's. If you're not in the LA area, I'd recommend checking out the bread options at your local farmers’ market. Ask the bread seller if they use fermented dough / sourdough starter (instead of active-dry yeast or instant yeast). If they say yes, buy some! This is the good stuff. Of course, you could always bake up a loaf yourself if you’re up for the task of making your own starter. Whichever path you choose, I hope it leads to delicious bread and possibly even toast with ricotta, honey, and pears, if you're into that sort of thing.

  3. I love homemade bread but haven't given sourdough a try yet. I've made the no-knead bread that everyone has made which bakes in a dutch oven but it make my dutch oven all scraggy looking now and I can't get it clean again. It's like it baked the marks on forever! Did your pot come clean after baking bread in it? I've been too scared to do it again incase it gets even worse!

  4. OMG. So good!! I have to admit, though, my mommy mind reeled when he took those pots out of the oven. Where's Teddy? My kids would have grabbed them for sure. Great video!

  5. Great video! Have you read about letting the loaf cool before slicing to help texture and avoid gumminess? I read about it in Jim Lahey's cookbook but have also seen it recommended elsewhere on the www...

  6. @PJ ahh sorry about the mom.me player. They always post the videos on youtube as well; I was just trying to support their site more.

@Dani Elis OMG. my pot looks like it's been through a war. OH well. so does a lot of our stuff these days. :)

@Unknown I haven't read about that, though Andy told us that normally he would let the bread sit about twenty minutes, but we were on TEddy's schedule, so we sliced it right away. :)

  7. Re Cleaning Pots: Bar Keepers Friend is my best friend for this job. Recently I found Myers sells a baking soda scrub that's useful too!

  9. First I must thank you for making it vegetarian! :) Then of course, it is how delicious it is. Of course the gymnastics are necessary after such a meal worthy of my oven!

  10. Just found your blog from a Smitten Kitchen shout-out!
I've make bread from the Tartine Bread cookbook and it's amazing but takes days of planning! I was lucky enough to get the starter from a friend and even though I haven't been able to bake very often, I diligently feed that starter weekly ....
