Video: Bon Appétempt + Gymnastics + Motherhood

I didn't set out to "Bon Appétempt" this Under Armour commercial. (And please make no mistake, I'm not getting paid by Under Armour!) This whole thing started as a video documentary on the physical struggle that is grocery shopping with an infant (and sometimes a toddler) in tow. But given my history with music-video-esque Bon Appétempt's (see here and here), one thing quickly led to another...

Next one on my list? Beyonce's 'Formation.' Anyone got like 100k for me to make that happen? Thanks in advance!

I really love this, Amelia! It reminds me of feminist films that I love--like Chantal Akerman's JEANNE DIELMAN, or this awesome new film-essay about women's labor:

Agree that yours is hilarious but it's also badass! <3

@Sara thank you so much for that link!! Loved these lines in the intro:
"Well before other forms of labor in the new global economy erased the line between work and life, housework (from cleaning and cooking to child-rearing) was always that with which we are never done. It seizes all of life incessantly, requiring that we envision new forms of expression and tactics of resistance."

I watched some of the film this morning but plan to watch more. And so so so glad you saw the video with your feminist slant. I totally struggled with what to say in that last title. I obviously decided on "Motherhood" but toyed with many other, less subtle messages. There were also so many of the other house chores I wanted to include but didn't/couldn't.

That being said, off to yoga class now while Matt watches both kids! Cheers to that!

Now that my kids are out of the toddlerhood phase I'm starting to forget how physical is mothering young kids. Anyway, nice parody!

Love it! Watching this video was part of my scarce 'me-time' today after work and mastering the first tantrums of a 7-month-old. It made me get my sh** together - although that's probably not what you intended ;-) Great editing btw!

@Deborah Climie ha! yes, I do, though I can't handle outsourcing my shopping, at least not the produce, which is so much of my shopping anyway. :) #avocados

I am reading your book now and positively enjoying it. What mastery, to tell your story and somehow incorporate a recipe to make your point. Don't want it to end. Thank you.

Only now that my son is eight months old and slept through the night for the first time this past week did I have time to catch myself up on all your posts that I missed in the past 8 months. THIS IS AMAZING!! I love that you depict the hustle of being a breastfeeding mom! I so relate to the laundry, the groceries, the cooking, the breastfeeding, the solid food feeding and even had a bout of mastitis around 4.5 months to boot. I went back to work at 5 and a half months and considered that amount of maternity leave a total luxury compared to what all of my friends got. The hardest thing? Finding time for myself to exercise. I had to give up my monthly pass to my yoga studio because I can barely get there once a month. So... you are basically superwoman. Thanks for posting this

@jjk84 We are ALL superwomen. Also, definitely did not get to a proper yoga class until around the 7 month mark. One of those first classes, the teacher had us push up from our stomachs to plank and it was IMPOSSIBLE. ditto boat pose. Now that Isaac is in daycare three days a week, I appreciate him/ his energy so much more. Let's chill! Let's play! Let's hug! Babies are smart.

Ha! I tried going to a heated vinyasa class around the six month mark and passed out during the first or second sun salutation (exemplary self care right here...). I kicked myself because the first thing I said when I came to (and the whole class was staring at me) was "I'm sorry". Ugh, such a gendered thing to say! I was so scared they were going to send me home when I just needed to have some time to move in my body! Luckily, instructor gave me some coconut water and we flowed on. So glad you're getting some more you time!

Amelia Morris said...

@jjk84 oh man. but yes(!) to moving in one's body. The entire last trimester of my second pregnancy, I just kept thinking/saying: "I can't wait to have my body to myself." Sometimes, reading wikipedia pages of historic people, I will come across a detail that the person is 1 of 8 children or something like that and I just think: HOLY SHIT. I want to talk to that woman right now.

Ha! Yes!! My grandmother had six, and I wish I could have had this conversation with her (she died when I was in high school). I am really feeling that about breastfeeding: I absolutely love doing it but Can. Not. Wait. To have my body to myself again...and to wear something without considering it's degree of nursing access!
